Recent discussions on the so-called third wave of democratization have touched on the involvement of religious organizations in democratic and human rights development. In Taiwan, the development of democracy and human rights has also come under the influence of foreign and local religious organizations, in particular the “Presbyterian Church in Taiwan” (台灣基督長老教會). Yet what are the motivations of the PCT in this socio-political sphere? This presentation will examine the theoretical reasons behind this Presbyterian interest in promoting democratization and human rights, followed by a historical investigation of the ways the PCT has attempted to influence political and social development in Taiwan. On the basis of this Taiwanese example, some recommendations will be offered for navigating church–state relationships in developing democratic contexts.
